Rescue centres receive free dog food from Burgess Pet Care

TWO dog rescue centres in Yorkshire have received a donation of food from Burgess Pet Care.

Pabs and Pals Rescue as well as Helping Yorkshire Poundies were winners of the firm’s first-ever Yorkshire Takeover campaign.

The centres will share a donation of £3,500 worth of Burgess Supadog food to help support their work.

The Yorkshire Takeover, which took place during the first week of August, invited consumers to nominate their favourite local rescues to receive food donations generated through sales of the brand’s Supadog Rich in Salmon Rescue Pack, while raising awareness of the estimated 100,000 dogs currently in care across the UK.

Pabs and Pals Rescue work to provide dogs with second chances through both physical and emotional rehabilitation. By offering luxury kennels, professional training, and tailored socialisation, they ensure each dog is fully prepared for a successful transition into a forever home.

Helping Yorkshire Poundies steps in to rescue and rehome dogs in urgent need, many of whom have suffered abuse or neglect and require costly veterinary treatment. The donations are helping these rescues provide essential care and new beginnings for more dogs in need.

While only the top two rescues with the highest number of nominations were selected as winners, the Yorkshire Takeover prize was made possible through Burgess’ ongoing pledge to donate 20p from every 12kg pack of Supadog Rich in Salmon sold, meaning rescues nationwide continue to benefit.

Suzanne Moyes, deputy managing director and in-house vet at Burgess Pet Care, said: "This campaign aimed to highlight the incredible work of organisations and volunteers caring for abandoned dogs under increasing pressure, and both Pabs and Pals and Helping Yorkshire Poundies are shining examples of this.

“We’re delighted that the dogs in their care are benefitting from a supply of Supadog and the essential nutrients it provides, supporting their health as they prepare for their forever homes.”

Ricky and Gwen, owners of Pabs and Pals, said: “Being chosen as the winner of the Yorkshire Takeover means a great deal to us. Having a reliable supply of quality food helps ensure our dogs’ nutritional needs are met, allowing us to dedicate more time and resources to rehabilitation and behavioural support.

“We’re grateful to everyone who voted for us for believing in the work we do. Campaigns like this not only provide essential support but also raise awareness of the ongoing challenges rescues face every day, like overcrowding and a lack of funding.”

Joanne Snaith, assistant manager at Helping Yorkshire Poundies, said: “Many of the dogs we rescue require critical care, and consistent, nutritious meals are essential to their rehabilitation.

“This donation allows us to provide for their daily nutrition and frees up resources to cover veterinary costs and other essential care. It’s a boost not just for the dogs, but for our team, enabling us to continue our work under often challenging conditions.”

The Yorkshire Takeover builds on the success of Burgess’ annual Greyhound & Lurcher Takeover, which has run since 2020 and resulted in £27,000 worth of food being donated to rescue centres in 2025.
